The SDGs: The Global Framework for Sustainability

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) constitute the primary international framework for sustainability management, established by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda.

This set of 17 goals and 169 targets provides a global roadmap for addressing the world’s major social, environmental, and economic challenges.

Today, the SDGs have become a common language among businesses, government agencies, investors, and civil society.

Organizations that align their activities with the SDGs not only contribute to sustainable development but also strengthen their strategic positioning.

SDG validation is an independent assessment process that validates and verifies how a project, organization, or activity specifically contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This type of assessment provides a verified SDG based on evidence, indicators, and objective criteria related to sustainability, impact, and continuous improvement.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the demand for transparency regarding sustainability

Investors, customers, and regulators are increasingly demanding clear evidence of the real impact organizations have

It is not enough to simply make commitments; organizations must demonstrate how their projects and activitiescontribute specifically to the SDGs

This context is driving organizations to structure, measure, and communicate their alignment in a rigorous and verifiable manner.

Sustainability is no longer just a matter of reputation; it is now a key factor in competitiveness and access to financing.

Obtaining SDG validation involves demonstrating, through verifiable documentation, that a project incorporates goals, actions, and indicators aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The assessment examines aspects such as:

  • Priority SDGs for the project
  • expected impact
  • actions taken
  • monitoring indicators
  • evidence of compliance

The goal is to ensure that alignment with the SDGs is not limited to a generic statement, but is supported by verifiable technical criteria.

In addition, it positions the organization as a leader in transparency and responsible management.

Credibility and trust in the information communicated by the organization.

This ensures that alignment with the SDGs is based on objective criteria, thereby avoiding the risk of greenwashing.

Drive internal improvement by tracking goals and metrics.

It provides technical support that strengthens relationships with key stakeholders: investors, government agencies, and clients.

It facilitates decision-making based on verifiable data and improves the quality of non-financial information.

The service provides a structured way to assess how a project contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.

This includes identifying relevant SDGs, defining objectives and actions, and establishing monitoring indicators.

The process can be broken down into two phases: initial validation of the approach and verification of compliance:

1. Validation Phase (ex ante)

Validationtakes place at the start of the project and aims to ensure that the approach to aligning with the SDGs is properly defined.

In this phase:

  • The organization prepares and submits itsSDG Alignment Report
  • The consistency of the proposed approach is reviewed:
  • Identification of relevant SDGs
  • Definition of associated objectives
  • Planned actions
  • Monitoring indicators

The validator checks whether:

  • The alignment is logically and consistently justified
  • The objectives are appropriate given the project's impact
  • Indicators allow for accurate performance measurement

If the proposal is in order, apositive validation is issued, certifying that the project is properly designed from a sustainability perspective.

Key benefit: Itensures from the outset that the project is properly focused and aligned with recognized standards, thereby avoiding rework and strengthening its technical soundness.

2. Verification Phase (ex post)

Verificationis conducted while the project is underway or after it has been completed, and its purpose is to assess the actual degree of compliance with the previously established requirements.

In this phase:

  • The organization is once again presenting theupdated Alignment Report
  • The following are reviewed to determine the extent to which they have been achieved:
    • Objectives Set
    • Actions Taken
    • Defined indicators

The verifier confirms:

  • If the actions have been implemented correctly
  • If the expected results have been achieved
  • If the claimed impact on the SDGs is real and demonstrable

It is based on an analysis of the SDG Alignment Report and culminates in the issuance of a Statement of Compliance.

The entire process is carried out using a robust, efficient methodology designed to deliver value to the customer.

The service adapts to the project's status:

  • Early-stage projects →validation only
  • Ongoing or completed projects →direct verification
  • Comprehensive approach →validation + verification

Therefore, an applicant may choose to complete only one of the phases— validation or verification—or both, depending on the stage of development their project is in.
