The Welfair™ Animal Welfare certification is an independent certificate approved by the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA) in collaboration with the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Neiker-Tecnalia®) based on the European benchmarks Welfare Quality and AWIN®, which evaluates and controls the quality of animal welfare on farms, growing areas and slaughterhouses, in a comprehensive manner, in the following species: bovine, porcine, ovine and for hens, chickens, rabbits and turkeys.
This pioneering model in Europe takes into account different parameters grouped into 4 basic principles and 12 criteria:
The growing demand of consumers in terms of animal welfare has promoted the consolidation of the Welfair™ certificate, which provides greater transparency and information and guarantees the rigorous application of a series of standardized and consensual measures at European level, which ensure animal welfare throughout the production cycle.
The Welfair™ certificate allows both producers and slaughterhouse managers to know the state of animal welfare in their facilities, thus promoting continuous improvement in terms of good, respectful and sustainable practices.
