More than 4.000 Spanish supermarkets will buy animal products certified under WELFAIRTM seal.

08/03/2021

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for products made under ethical and sustainable development criteria among consumers of products of animal origin. There is a growing interest in knowing the production systems and, more and more, ethical practices are demanded and that they guarantee that the conditions in which farm animals live are optimal for a life without suffering or stress; taking into account fundamental aspects of animal welfare: food, accommodation and physical and emotional health.

The products that are identified with the WELFAIR™ seal come from animals raised on farms that guarantee the 4 basic principles of animal welfare: behavior, health, housing and food.

WELFAIR™ is the first animal welfare seal developed by the Institute for Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) in collaboration with the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (NEIKER) that applies the European Welfare Quality and AWIN® (Animal Welfare Indicators) protocols developed after more than 15 years of research in Animal Welfare.

The WELFAIR™ seal allows consumers to make an ethical choice for animal products from certified farms.

The WELFAIR™ animal welfare seal is now available on animal products in more than 4,000 supermarkets throughout Spain. For the first time, consumers have at their disposal a scientifically endorsed indicator that allows them to choose a more ethical purchase, among a wide range of foods. An indicator that guarantees animal welfare according to European scientific standards, compared to non-certified products.

Products with the WELFAIR™ animal welfare certificate are already present in supermarket, hypermarket and cash & carry chains: Lidl, Bonpreu, Esclat, Eroski, Aldi, Carrefour, Consum, Veritas, BonArea, Makro, Caprabo, Mercadona, Alcampo, GM and Froiz. It is important to remember that the award of the seal is made to the various certified products, not in general to the establishment that markets them.
